What the Ancients Thought of Jesus

With Mark Chavalas

Ancient historians didn't completely ignore Jesus and the nascent Christian movement, there are a few mentions. So, as we prepare for Easter, a time when many different media perspectives on Jesus proliferate, we take a look at what people wrote about him almost 2000 years ago. Our guest on this week's program is Mark Chavalas, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. His column on what the ancients thought about Jesus is featured in the latest issue of our quarterly magazine, ARTIFAX.

The Star of Bethlehem Mystery, part 3

With Owen Gingerich

For more on the October Conference at the University of Groningen on Mike Molnars explanation for the Star of Bethlehem, we talked with Owen Gingerich, a professor of Astronomy and the History of Science at Harvard University. Professor Gingerich read professor Molnar’s paper at the conference, since Molnar couldn’t attend, and has been an early supporter of his approach. But he indicates that while the astronomers, historians, theologians and Bible scholars who attended the conference liked Molnar’s approach, they don’t necessarily agree with all of his conclusions.

Four Persian Kings

With Prof. Mike Caba

Four Kings of Persia are mentioned in Ezra 4:5-7: Cyrus, Darius, Xerxes, and Artaxerxes. These same four are mentioned in the writings of the Greek historians Herodotus and Thucydides. And archaeologists have found their ancient reigns well attested. In the latest issue of ARTIFAX magazine, professor Mike Caba connects these threads of ancient history. And on this program he discusses the connections and their significance, starting with Cyrus and the Cyrus Cylinder.
