Gezer Palace/Cana Cave Workshop

With Clyde Billington

Professor Clyde Billington, the new president of the Near East Archaeological Society and fellow editor of ARTIFAX magazine, joins me to discuss some of the news items from the latest issue of ARTIFAX. Our discussion includes this summer's excavation of a palace from the time of Solomon at Tel Gezer, the discovery of the cave that may have been the source of the water/wine containers present at the wedding in Cana attended by Jesus and his disciples, the results of the excavations in the priestly quarter of first century Jerusalem, and a possible gem from the Jewish High Priest's ephod.

Exodus and the High Priests of Amun, part 2

With Charles Aling

More from Egyptologist Charles Aling, looking at role-changing clues to the impact of the Exodus. Professor Aling examines three important positions that were often all three held by the high priest of Amun. But after the reign of Amenhotep II -- who may be the pharaoh of the Exodus, going by the Bible's internal chronology -- these positions changed significantly, as if the reigning pharaohs no longer trusted the high priests of Amun. An intriguing suggestion that the Exodus changed the Egyptian ruling class, right up to the reign of Akhenaten.

Galilee Mosaics 2015

With Clyde Billington

015 appears to have been a fairly productive excavation year in Israel, particularly in the Galilee, where two different excavations reported major mosaic developments. In the excavations at Huqoq, overlooking the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, archaeologist Jodi Magness (University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) continues to excavate a fifth century synagogue with stunning beautiful mosaics. Additional work was done this summer on a mosaic which appears to illustrate the tradition that describes a meeting between Alexander the Great and the Jewish high priest in Jerusalem. At the same we report on the University of Hartford excavation of the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, which uncovered a more plain (crosses, for instance) mosaic dating about a century earlier. The mosaics are about six feet below the current floor level, and plans call for a glass window installation so visitors can see the mosaics. Additional news reported in this program, with my ARTIFAX co-editor Clyde Billington, a first century miqva discovery in the Ein Kerem area of Jerusalem (traditional home of the parents of John the Baptist) and tensions over the new carpet installation at the Dome of the Rock.

Unconfirmed Traditions

With Prof. Keith Schoville

Some well-known Biblical traditions have no basis in fact. On this program we discuss two of them: the Valley of Gehenna and the rope around the high priests ankle. We also discuss a couple of recent reports of new discoveries that do not seem to be what they were purported to be. And we discuss plans for excavations in the Biblical city of Sidon.
