Beit Shemesh and Kiriath Yearim

With Clyde Billington

Two stories that are linked in the Ark of the Covenant tradition are reported in the news digest of the latest issue of ARTIFAX magazine. After the ark was captured by the Philistines at the battle of Aphek, it was returned to the Israelites at Beit Shemesh in a cart pulled by two cows. (I Samuel 6:12) The men of Beit Shemesh didn’t know what to do with the ark, so they sent it to Kiriath Yearim. Both Beit Shemesh and Kiriath Yearim are under excavation at the present time. Beit Shemesh is yielding new information about the restoration of Judean cities after destruction by Sennacherib at the beginning of the 6th century BC. And Kiriath Yearim has an artificial mountain top, much like the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. These stories and the discoveries from Canaanite tombs excavated at Tel Megiddo are discussed in this week’s program.

Shroud of Turin Research

With Scott Stripling

Shiloh excavation director Scott Stripling, featured in our last two programs, also participated in a research project for the Shroud of Turin during a trip to Israel several months ago. The project involved limestone particles that have been found on the shroud, and a visit to the underground tombs at the Ecole Biblique, which are adjacent to the Garden Tomb.

Temples and Tombs 2014

With Clyde Billington

It’s catch-up time once again on The Book & The Spade as we review items from the news digest of the latest issue of ARTIFAX magazine that haven’t been discussed on the radio program yet. Professor Billington, my ARTIFAX co-editor, discusses a large Late Bronze temple excavated this past year at Tel Burna in the Shephelah region. Then we discuss new information on animal sacrifices at the Early Bronze Age temple being excavated at Megiddo, “the most monumental single structure uncovered so far from the Early Bronze Age in the Levant.” And finally, a few words about the most exciting excavation currently underway, the excavation of a massive tomb in northern Greece from the time of Alexander the Great.

The Tomb of Pharaoh's Daughter

With Prof. Clyde Billington

The tombs located in the Kidron Valley and the Hinnom Valley around the Old City of Jerusalem have all been surveyed but many have not been given detailed scrutiny. On this program, we look at the details about one particular tomb, as reported in the January-February 2013 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review.
