The 4 Room House, Slavery, and Selah

With Clyde Billington

The Israelite 4 Room House is characteristic of Israelite settlements in the early Iron Age. Archaeologist Avraham Faust has an idea that this iconic home design is connected to women’s purity restrictions which were common in many ancient cultures. This is one of the topics under discussion on this program. We also discuss the discovery of a cuneiform document that describes slavery in the region of Samaria, and we discuss some new archaeology taking place in the capital city of the Edomites: Selah.

Frankincense Returns to Israel

With Matthew Kalman

Journalist Matthew Kalman returns to The Book & The Spade to discuss his latest news scoop, the return of Frankincense in Israel. We talked to Matthew about his interview with Dr. Elaine Soloway, of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies. She is the botanist who we have discussed several times in recent years for her work in nurturing a 2,000-year old date seed to grow. The date palm tree is now seven years old. But Dr. Soloway has a new project, the first frankincense tree to grow in Israel in 1,500 years.
