Fake Dead Sea Scrolls at the Museum of the Bible, part 2

With Colette Loll

Colette Loll of Art Fraud Insights was in charge of the investigation of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Museum of the Bible collection. In this interview she details how the investigation was conducted and how they determined that all 16 scroll fragments were 20th century forgeries. This interview was conducted to collect information for the article I wrote on the Museum’s Dead Sea Scrolls collection for Christianity Today magazine.

Fake Dead Sea Scrolls at the Museum of the Bible

With Jeffrey Kloha

This is the first in a series of interviews which I have done for an article for Christianity Today that was just posted online today. Jeffrey Kloha is Chief Curatorial Officer at the Museum of the Bible and the host of an academic symposium that was held at the museum on March 13, 2020, the day that the results of the museum-sponsored investigation into the 16 scroll fragments was released. Jeffrey gives the background on how the scroll items came into the possession of the museum, how the first suspicions were raised about the fragments, and then the investigative process. An embarrassment for the museum, but much praise from academic scholars for the way it was resolved.

Thessalonian Subways and Seneca's History

With Clyde Billington

Our final review of archaeology digest news items from the Summer 2019 issue of ARTIFAX news magazine includes information from Thessalonica, where a subway construction project is far behind schedule due to all of the archaeological treasures which are being found, and a copy of Seneca's Histories has been found for the first time in history. Up til now Seneca's work has only been found quoted in other ancient documents. Other news items include the excavation plans for the huge hippodrome at Laodicea, one of the seven cities of Revelation; a discovery of the oldest shipwreck in the Mediterranean (dating to 1600 BC) carrying a cargo of copper ingots, and plans to make the historic site of Karkemish an open air museum along the Euphrates River.

Byzantine Desert Monasteries and the Anchor Church

With Yizhar Hirschfeld

This week's program comes from a 1993 interview that I did at the Israel Museum with Yizhar Hirschfeld, at that time the Field Director of Archaeology for the museum. Among the topics we discussed were the Byzantine monasteries of the Judean desert, the topic of his PhD studies, and the Anchor Church of Mt. Berenice in Tiberias. It too was an outgrowth of the Byzantine era, and was visited by pilgrims for many centuries until its destruction at the end of the Crusader period. Hirschfeld was beginning another major excavation in Tiberias in 2006 when I had some correspondence with him. He died suddenly on November 16, which just happens to be my birthday. He had a distinguished archaeological career that ended much too soon. May his memory be blessed.

Top Ten Biblical Archaeology Stories of 2018

With Gordon Govier

It may take years before we know what was the most important Biblical Archaeology discovery of 2018, but every year I try to identify 10 of the top stories of Biblical Archaeology that were reported on during the year just past, some involving discoveries from many years ago. For instance, our top item, a ring with Pilate's seal, was actually discovered in the 1960s but not identified until 2018. And the statue head of the ancient king, our #2 discovery, was found in 2017 but didn't create news until it was put on display in the Israel Museum in 2018.
