Jesus and the Synagogue

With Jordan Ryan

The synagogue is a significant part of Jesus' ministry, as recounted in the Gospels. And so little is known about the beginnings of the synagogue, that the Gospel accounts are actually a major resource for such studies. Wheaton College professor Jordan Ryan, author of The Role of the Synagogue in the Aims of Jesus (Fortress Press, 2017), has excavated at Magdala, where one of the most recently discovered first century synagogues was discovered, and has extensively studied the history of the synagogue. In addition to this 3-part interview, Ryan will be speaking in Madison on Saturday, October 19, 2019, International Archaeology Day. His talk is at 7pm at Upper House, 365 East Campus Mall #200, on the University of Wisconsin campus. Presented by the Madison Biblical Archaeology Society and Upper House. Magdala, Home of Mary Magdalene

With Shlomo Ben Asher

One of the most recent archaeological excavation sites that we visit in Israel is Magdala, on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. The excavation started at Magdala only 10 years ago. Just inches below the surface, archaeologists discovered the remains of a first century synagogue, one of only seven such synagogues discovered in Israel thus far. The odds that Jesus visited this synagogue are probably better than any of the others. In the excavation, archaeologists uncovered a uniquely carved stone platform, which was called a podium, by our Israeli guide Shlomo Ben Asher. It’s true purpose is unknown, and subject to speculation.

Jesus & the Remains of His Day

With Craig Evans

Biblical Archaeology covers thousands of years of Old Testament history. It also includes three years of the public ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Professor Craig Evans of Houston Baptist University has a new book, Jesus and the Remains of His Day, that focuses on some of the most important archaeological discoveries that tell us about Jesus, his ministry, and the world he lived in. Jesus’ ministry was centered around the Sea of Galilee and today cities along the seashore are being excavated, including Magdala, the home of Mary Magdalene. But there’s a lot more, and we discuss these discoveries in these three programs.
