The 4 Room House, Slavery, and Selah

With Clyde Billington

The Israelite 4 Room House is characteristic of Israelite settlements in the early Iron Age. Archaeologist Avraham Faust has an idea that this iconic home design is connected to women’s purity restrictions which were common in many ancient cultures. This is one of the topics under discussion on this program. We also discuss the discovery of a cuneiform document that describes slavery in the region of Samaria, and we discuss some new archaeology taking place in the capital city of the Edomites: Selah.

Two of the top archaeology news stories in the latest issue of ARTIFAX magazine concern the dating of copper mining operations at Timna through ancient donkey dung and the collapse of the wall near the Iron Age Gate at Dan following recent rainfall. These stories and more from the latest issue of ARTIFAX are discussed with my ARTIFAX co-editor, professor Clyde Billington.

Hezekiah's Seal and Iron-Age Farmhouse

With Clyde Billington

In this program we take a look at some of the news digest items from the Winter issue of ARTIFAX magazine that has just been published. The news items involve the discovery of a seal impression from King Hezekiah’s official seal (pictured), as well as the discovery of an Iron Age Farmhouse and a Byzantine monastery at Rosh Ha-‘Ayin (near Tel Aphek where I volunteered on an excavation in 1978), and the discovery of a Canaanite citadel at Nahariya, on the coast north of Akko.

The Heights of David and Khirbet Qeiyafa

With Clyde Billington

Professor Clyde Billington, my co-editor on ARTIFAX magazine, has an article in the latest issue taking another look at Khirbet Qeiyafa. This is a site we’ve discussed a number of times because of its role reframing the debate over David and Solomon and the early Iron Age in Israel. Professor Billington draws a possible connection between Khirbet Qeiyafa and the Karnak inscription of Pharaoh Shoshenq.
