Philistine Cemetery at Ashkelon

With Clyde Billington

From the news digests in the summer 2016 issue of ARTIFAX magazine, we report on the latest discoveries in biblical archaeology, including a Philistine cemetery at Ashkelon, and an Egyptian statue found at Hazor. We briefly mention the mosaics of Huqoq and the speculation of another tomb inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun, a search that seems to be fruitless at this point.

2016 Excavation Plans

With Todd Bolen

It’s a long standing tradition throughout the 33 years of The Book & The Spade that we start the year by looking ahead to the planned institutional excavations. It gives us a platform for discussing what’s happening in biblical archaeology, and what has been happening in the past couple years. In 2016 one long running excavation, at Ashkelon, is coming to a close. But a number of excavations have started just in the last few years so there will continue to be a lot of work to do. And you never know what’s going to turn up.

Ashkelon Under Attack

With Prof. Daniel Master

Rockets were flying from Gaza aimed at Ashkelon in recent weeks. It’s quiet now and we took the opportunity for an archaeological update from Daniel Master, Professor of Archaeology at Wheaton College and currently the field director of the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon, which has been actively uncovering the ancient history of this site since 1985. Ashkelon has a rich history, dating from the Canaanites to the Crusaders. It’s the home of the oldest arched city gate in the world (pictured), the largest dog cemetery in the world, and the Philistine city visited by Samson when he needed to pick up 30 suits of clothes to settle a wager that he lost during his wedding.
