Goliath's Gath 2015

With Aren Maier

The area along the ancient border between the Israelites and the Philistines is one of the areas of particular interest in the field of biblical archaeology right now, and one of the largest sites of the more than half dozen currently under excavation is Tel es-Safi/Gath. Gath was not only the home of Goliath and his giant kin, but also the largest of the cities of the Philistine pentapolis. We first talked with Arean Maier when he was beginning this excavation two decades ago, and it was time for an update on the latest discoveries, including a giant gate from the time of David and Goliath.

The Mask of Pan

With Clyde Billington

Archaeologists found a bronze mask of the Greek/Roman god Pan at the decapolis city of Hippos/Sussita. Who was Pan and how did he relate to the biblical story? That’s one of the topics we discuss in this program, reporting on news digest items from the latest issue of ARTIFAX magazine. Other topics include an ancient Christian grave yard found in Saudi Arabia, and a cache of Egyptian seals from in the Negev desert.

NEAS Report: Abila and Iconoclasm

With David Vila and Adeeb Mickahail

A couple of interviews from the annual meeting of the Near East Archaeological Society, held last month in Baltimore. I talked with David Vila of John Brown University about the ongoing excavations at Abila, one of the cities of the decapolis. This excavation has been going on for 30 years, focusing mainly on the Byzantine period so far. I was also intrigued by some of the observations about iconoclasm made by Adeeb Mickahail, who teaches Old Testament at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. I think he had some interesting observations about idolatry in the Old Testament.

Hippos/Sussita - a city of the Decapolis

With Prof. Mark Schuler

When we first discussed Hippos/Sussita in the early days of The Book & The Spade, it was a major site just waiting to be excavated by archaeologists. Finally, a dozen years ago, the archaeologists arrived. We have been reporting on exciting discoveries at Hippos/Sussita in the last few years, finally our chance to talk with an archaeologist who has been working there: prof. Mark Schuler of Concordia University in St. Paul. Prof. Schuler is in charge of the excavations in the NE quadrant of this hilltop city overlooking the Sea of Galilee, including one of the eight Byzantine churches that have been identified.
